Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead is the most spectacular, colourful, and joyful event celebrating the theme of death. The traditional Mexican festival is a celebration honouring lost loved ones; it originated thousands of years ago from the Aztec, Toltec and Nahua people, who knew that death was just part of the cycle of life and believed that mourning the dead was disrespectful.
On the day of the festivities, November 2nd, it is believed that the border to the spirit world is removed and the souls of the dead awaken, temporarily returning to the living world to feast, drink, dance and play music with their loved ones. The traditions associated with Day of the Dead are to demonstrate love and respect for those family members who have passed, and so the living treat those family members as honoured guests. These traditions include leaving food and flowers as offerings at the graves of loved ones, or on alters called 'ofrendas' which are built in the home. The streets are filled with bright parades, parties, singing and dancing, but perhaps the most recognised aspect of modern-day celebrations is the costuming. The living have their faces artistically painted as skulls and dress in beautiful, ornate costumes inspired by illustrator Jose Guadalupe Posada's 1910 drawing 'Calavera de la Catrina'. It is thought that along with the loud celebrations the colourful outfits rouse the dead and keep them close during the fun.
